Brutally Confined is a photo book that includes two projects of the photographer Michael Wolf, which he used as a means to indagate the relationship between individuals and the large metropolis from them occupied.
Architecture of Density is a collection of pictures dedicated to the massive Hong Kong buildings, geometric modules from which traces of intimate humanity shine through. In Tokyo Compression, instead, Wolf has pictured the faces of men and women crammed in the subway cars of the Japanese capital.
The choice to place side by side these two projects originates from the feeling of unbearable claustrophobia and compression that both works emanate, but also from the strong impact given by the contrast between the close-up shots of single individuals and the facades of the giant buildings.

Photographs by Michael Wolf
The book format, tall and narrow, 9x29,5cm, echoes the feeling of claustrophobia; in contrast, the peculiarity of the folding pages is intended to give breath to the places and individuals imprinted in the photos.
The book features a dust jacket with flaps in semi-transparent paper, that can be removed and utilized as a poster: on one side is printed “confined” and the author’s name, while the other features “brutally” and some details of the pictures included in the book. These, if held up to the light, reproduce the repetitive regularity of the windows of the Honk Kong buildings.
